History:
Winnie’s childhood was rather average for many in the Enchanted Forest. Her family were farmers, who lived in the countryside, and they had been there for generations, making their own quiet living. Winnie grew up around the animals and with responsibilities from a young age. All of the family, her three brothers and one sister, were involved in the running of the farm. Winnie’s least favorite part was when she had to go to the city with her mother and she developed anxiety attacks from an early age to similar closed spaced and crowds. By the time she was ten, she was no longer required to visit the market with her mother but was given more responsibility on the farm while her younger sister went to market with her mother.
Winnie’s father died because he supported and helped Snow White. Winnie was only fifteen at the time and had to look after her younger brother and sister. The family nearly moved to the city where it would be easier to find jobs for all of them and they wouldn’t be overwhelmed with a farm. Due to her brothers returning home, they were able to keep the farm going, but her brothers brought their own families with them, making the house seem small. Winnie took to spending a lot of time outside and exploring more than she had before. After some time, Winnie decided it was time for her to move on and find her own way. Her family did not want to let her go, as they feared for her safety, especially with the war between Regina and Snow White still going on. She wasn’t known to be particularly brave but she could care for herself in other ways. She wasn’t a great hunter but she knew plants well from the books she read. Still, she relied a lot on the kindness of those she met throughout the forest.
One day she was caught in a storm and offered shelter by a family of small royalty. Unbeknownst to Winnie, the family had been searching for a true princess to marry their son, a prince. They offered her a bed that was piled so high with mattress she would have had to use a ladder. Being afraid of heights, Winnie opted instead to sleep on the floor, which was hard and uncomfortable. When the family asked her the next day how she had slept, she replied with soft honesty, though putting the blame on being away from home. Even so, the family took it to mean she had slept badly due to the magic pea they had placed under the mattresses and declared her a true princess, even officially titling her as a princess. It was a strange affair for her as she did not enjoy the attention of all the people on her. Winnie protested briefly but got swept up in everything. The prince proposed but Winnie hardly knew him, and she asked that they could delay their marriage until they got to know each other. Unfortunately as she got to know him, she realized he was dim witted and dull. Winnie didn’t want to marry him but she didn’t want to disappoint the family either.
Somewhat fortunately, the Evil Queen’s curse had been cast and swept over the land, drawing Winnie and everyone else into Storybrooke. There Winnie was known as Freddie Valentine, a brash trouble maker who was often in trouble with the law. Petty theft, public disturbance and trespassing were her most oft crimes. When the curse was broken, Winnie was mortified by her alter ego’s actions. She started being productive within the town, doing her best to keep her head down while making amends with those that Freddie had been destructive towards. When Pan’s curse hit the town, Winnifred was transported back to the Enchanted Forest with Snow White and the others.
She’s not particularly pleased to be in Storybrooke once more but as with most things, she makes the best out of it.
